The Indie Film Site Network (IFSN) has selected the documentary No Other Land as the recipient of its 2024 Advocate Award, an honor that recognizes independent films addressing humanitarian or environmental issues with artistic distinction. The film, directed by Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham, and Rachel Szor, will receive one million media impressions across IFSN's partner outlets, which include The Film Stage, Hammer to Nail, IONCINEMA.com, RogerEbert.com, Slant Magazine, and Screen Anarchy. Letterboxd, the social network for film enthusiasts, is also contributing to the award.
The announcement was made by IFSN, a collaboration of respected media outlets dedicated to independent and international cinema. The Advocate Award, now in its third year, was created to support films that shed light on pressing global issues. Previous winners include D. Smith's Kokomo City and Shaunak Sen's All That Breathes.
No Other Land follows Basel Adra, a Palestinian activist from Masafer Yatta, who has documented the Israeli military's destruction of homes in his community since childhood. The film captures what the directors describe as the largest forced transfer of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Adra's path crosses with Yuval Abraham, an Israeli journalist who joins the struggle, and together they document the erasure of their homeland over several years. Their relationship, marked by the stark inequality between them—Adra living under military occupation and Abraham enjoying freedom—becomes a central theme of the film.
The documentary, produced by a collective of four young activists, was made during a period of intense conflict in the region. The filmmakers describe it as an act of creative resistance against apartheid and a search for a path toward equality and justice.
Why This Film Matters
Jordan Raup, co-founder of IFSN and editor-in-chief of The Film Stage, praised the film as "essential" and commended the filmmakers' bravery in capturing images that the world needs to see. He also urged U.S. distributors to show similar courage and bring the film to a wider audience. The film currently lacks U.S. distribution, though it had a qualifying run in November at Film at Lincoln Center.
No Other Land premiered at the 2024 Berlinale, where it won the Panorama Audience Award for Best Documentary Film. It has since screened at CPH:DOX, Visions du Réel, Telluride, Toronto, and the New York Film Festival, building a strong festival reputation.
The IFSN Advocate Award is selected by a jury of writers and editors from the network's sites, with each site nominating a finalist. This year's finalists include Mati Diop's Dahomey, Gregory Kershaw and Michael Dweck's Gaucho Gaucho, Jane Schoenbrun's I Saw the TV Glow, Monica Sorelle's Mountains, and Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie's Sugarcane. Each finalist will receive 100,000 media impressions across IFSN.
The award underscores the network's mission to support film criticism and foster a community of indie film lovers. For filmmakers, the media impressions provide significant visibility, which can be crucial for securing distribution and audience attention in a crowded marketplace.
